Doha’s QD Recycling Factory, a partner of Qatar’s JMJ Group Holding, inaugurated a pioneering recycling factory for sustainable manufacturing in Al Afja, Mesaieed.

Sheikh Mansour bin Jabor Al-Thani, Chairman of Al Mansour Group and Sheikh Jabor bin Mansour Al-Thani, Chairman of JMJ Group Holding, performed the machinery switch on at a launch ceremony for the state-of-the-art plant designed as a trailblazing force in the production of secondary aluminium, copper-based alloy ingots.

Addressing an invited gathering of VIP guests and stakeholders, including Mr. Hassan Nasser M. Al Naser, from the Recycling and Waste Treatment Department, Engineer Ruben Munoz, Director of GSAS Trust at Gulf Organization for Research & Development and Engineer Ibrahim Al Jundi, Head of GSAS-MEP Group-Gulf Organization for Research & Development, who later toured the advanced technology plant, Mr. Riyas Kakkunnath, Managing Director of QD Recycling Factory highlighted how the new facility builds on the company’s three decades of foundry processing and smelting success and contributes to Qatar’s mounting sustainability credentials and its National Vision 2030 goals.

“This new plant, which will recycle all types of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal, sets a new benchmark in sustainable manufacturing making a range of products from 6kg ingots to 400 kg billets for aluminium, copper-based alloy,” he commented. “Investment in the factory is in line with the JMJ Group’s and our own commitment to sector leadership and innovation in adhering to the highest international operating standards and conducting business in a way that seeks to protect the environment. This factory stands for dynamism and modernity and will be a transformative force for positive change benefitting Qatar, the region, and the wider global domain.

“By recycling scrap metal, we can significantly reduce energy consumption, curb carbon emissions, help conserve natural resources and promote a sustainable future. This is the future of manufacturing where sustainability will be at the core to ensure a greener, healthier environment for all and for future generations.”

The QD Plant has an annual production capacity of 24,000 metric tons of aluminium and 14,000 tons of copper and base alloys and has been operating for 33 years. Materials from the factory have contributed to the creation of high-performance products for the automotive, aerospace and defence, electricity and electronics, construction and infrastructure sectors.

Mr. Riyas  Kakkunnath also revealed that in a further investment phase, QD Recycling Factory plans to open a battery recycling plant in Qatar by the middle of next year.

“As with this new scrap metal recycling plant, the battery-focused facility will clearly demonstrate that sustainable development is a tangible, attainable goal. They will set new regional precedents for sustainable manufacturing, which recognises the importance of preserving the environment by conserving resources while pursuing economic prosperity,” he added.

“With these investments, QD Factory is unleashing the massive power of sustainable manufacturing igniting transformative change in the reshaping of the manufacturing landscape in significantly elevating and accelerating Qatar’s industrial journey.”
