Dhaka, Bangladesh - In a gesture symbolizing the deep-rooted friendship between Bangladesh and Qatar, authorities in the capital city have announced plans to name a prominent road and park after His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar. The decision comes ahead of the Emir's anticipated two-day state visit to Bangladesh, scheduled for April 22nd and 23rd.
According to the official itinerary, the Emir will inaugurate the park located in the Kalshi area of Mirpur, under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), on April 23rd at 3 pm. Additionally, a road connecting Mirpur's ECB Chattar to the Kalshi Flyover will also bear the Emir's name, further cementing the strong bilateral ties between the two nations.
Atiqul Islam, the DNCC Mayor, expressed his sentiment regarding the decision, stating, "Qatar is one of Bangladesh's closest and longstanding friendly states. The two countries have enjoyed fantastic relations since Bangladesh's independence, and the naming of a park and a road after the Emir of Qatar is a fitting tribute to commemorate his memorable visit."
Drawing a parallel with other instances of honoring foreign leaders, the DNCC mayor cited the example of a road named after Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, in Dhaka's Banani area. He added, "There is also a road named after our Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Turkey."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had previously announced plans to construct a park and a playground in the Kalshi area during a rally on February 19th, 2022. She allocated 16 bighas (approximately 5.3 acres) of land for the project, intending it as a gift to the residents of the area.
Mir Khairul Alam, the DNCC Chief Executive Officer, elaborated on the facilities to be offered at the new park and playground. "In addition to cricket and football playing areas and youth training facilities, the park will feature separate spaces for walking and a dedicated children's corner," he said.
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on April 22nd for a two-day state visit, during which he will participate in the inauguration ceremonies for the newly named road and park, further strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
